Laila Egbers

Laila Egbers is a visual artist based in Zuid-Scharwoude, the Netherlands. Her work explores dreams, trauma, and the relationship between psychological experience and the physical body. She visualizes these themes through anatomically exposed figures that contain miniature narrative scenes within their organs.

Drawing from classic literature and fairy tales, familiar characters are used as symbolic entry points into more complex psychological landscapes. Within each work, the scenes are embedded in specific organs and connected to their biological functions. With this, she transforms the body into an anatomical map through which emotional landscapes, dreamscapes, and the subconscious can be explored.

Influenced by intensely vivid dream experiences and an interest in the psychology of trauma, her practice investigates how collective narratives can be used as a language for complex inner states that are not easily expressed in words. Through layered visual storytelling, the works invite the viewer to actively uncover the meaning, rather than passively receive it.

While currently realized primarily through painting, this ongoing process expands into sculptural forms and is intended to develop further into immersive environments that allow viewers to physically engage with these anatomical narrative systems.
